Google Adwords

Google Adwords is a highly targeted way of getting traffic to your site. When anybody does a search on Google, there are two sets of search results which come up. There are organic searches with about 10 results/page, and sponsored listings which appear to the right of, and sometimes above the organic listings. Sponsored listings are a way of getting your site visited quickly without having to wait to build up a high page rank. It costs £5 to sign up to Google Adwords but after that you only pay for performance on a PPC (pay per click) basis.

With Adwords you have to target individual keywords which you want to associate your advert with. You can also use keyword targeting to restrict the results. For example:

cricket tickets : This keyword would show for any search containing the words 'cricket' and 'tickets'. Such as 'cricket tickets', 'uk cricket tickets', 'cricket and football ticket prices', 'how much were cricket tickets last year' etc...

"cricket tickets" : This keyword would only show when the search is for the phrase in quotes in that exact order. Such as 'cricket tickets', 'cheap cricket tickets', 'buy cricket tickets' etc...

[cricket tickets] : This keyword would only show when the search is for exactly what is written between the brackets and no other text.

Once you have chosen your set of keywords, you have to set a CPC (cost per click) and monthly budget. There are a number of factors which affect how highly your advert appears and CPC is just one of these. Another important factor is CTR (click through rate), so it is important to phrase your advert well. Most publishers who operate affiliate sites use Google Adwords for at least some of their traffic.
